A
brief history
WVOU,
the defunct call letters of a once-prosperous broadcasting station
at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, had fallen on hard times.
Money had run tight, and a tragic accident involving a lightning
bolt and a transmitter meant the radio station was relegated to
a fate worse than death: closed circuit television.
Years
passed, and WVOU was nearly forgotten, a haven for lazy Communications
majors, a few indie rockers, and the otherwise bored. Though there
were some wine socials and some good times (we'll never forget
the year Jonas came to the station as part of his probation and
stole all of our Motorhead CDs), but for the most part WVOU languished
in the basement of Bomberger, the old cathedral, having no one to
love it but the ghost of Zacharias Ursinus, the school's founder,
and Lupita, a mechanically-sympathetic sanitation worker. The spirit
of WVOU ebbed, and with it, we like to think, the Spirit of Ursinus
died a little too.*
But
those days are no longer. Some new blood and a few pagan
incantations later—plus the hard work of some dedicated individuals—and
the station is making a comeback. Fear not, little WVOU, your time
will come yet!
Here's
to the future.
*In fact he was already dead. That's what made him a spirit. But
he was way more depressed than usual.
